Product Owner, Clinical AI

#7835

Contract-to-Hire · On-site · NJ · Posted 2026-10-13

Position purpose

Our client, a growing multi-site healthcare provider, is putting AI to work across its clinics through its own clinical platform and AI assistant. The Product Owner, Clinical AI is the link between the clinicians who use these tools and the developers who build them.

This person learns what has already been built, helps clinics across the network put it to use, gathers what clinicians want changed, takes those requests back to the developers and tests the result. The role keeps a multi-year AI roadmap moving.

This is a product role. It is not a prompt engineer, a developer or a team lead, and no coding is required. The right person is a smart healthcare professional who understands how doctors and nurses work and is "product smart": they know what the product does today and where it is going next.

Position detail

Title: Product Owner, Clinical AI

Works with: Clinicians and clinic leaders, the AI developers who built each module, Product, Clinical Education and IT

Direct reports: None. This is an individual contributor role.

Engagement type: Contract to hire

Work model: Remote

Start: As soon as the right person is found.

What this person works on

The role centers on the AI features in the client's clinical platform. Examples include:

Summarization of clinical documents.

An AI assistant that drafts responses to patient messages in different tones.

Chart-monitoring tools that flag patient follow-ups.

Clinician-built prompts. For example, a physician uses a prompt to draft letters. This person shares it with other clinics, collects their changes, takes them to the developers and tests the update.

Key responsibilities

Learn the product

Build a working knowledge of every AI module: what it does, who uses it, and how it fits clinical workflows.

Learn directly from the developers who built each module, through recorded knowledge-transfer sessions and time with the current product team.

Understand the product roadmap and be able to explain it to clinicians.

Bridge clinicians and developers

Serve as the go-to product contact for physicians, nurses and clinic staff on AI features.

Share tools and good practices that work in one clinic with the other clinics in the network.

Collect feedback and change requests from clinicians and turn them into clear, prioritized requests for the developers.

Explain technical trade-offs to clinicians in plain language, and explain clinical needs to developers.

Test and roll out

Test new and changed features against real clinical workflows before they reach the clinics.

Confirm that requested changes work as intended and close the loop with the clinicians who asked for them.

Support adoption as features roll out to existing clinics and to new clinics as they open.

Keep the backlog healthy

Maintain the list of AI change requests and enhancements, with clear priorities and acceptance criteria.

Work with the developers during planning and delivery, and keep stakeholders informed of what is coming and when.

What this role is not

Not a prompt engineer. Curiosity about prompt engineering is a bonus later, not a requirement.

Not a developer. No coding is required.

Not a team lead or people manager.

Required qualifications

Healthcare background with a clear understanding of how physicians, nurses and clinical teams work day to day.

Experience as a product owner, product analyst, clinical informatics analyst or in a similar role that connects clinical users with technology teams.

Hands-on exposure to AI or automation tools in a healthcare setting, such as conversational AI, chatbots, ambient documentation, summarization or patient-messaging tools.

Experience gathering requirements, writing clear requests or user stories, and testing changes before release.

Strong communication skills with both clinicians and technical teams.

A fast learner who is energized by new technology and comfortable learning a product by immersion.

Preferred qualifications

Experience with an EHR or clinical platform, including proprietary or internally built systems.

Clinical background (for example nursing or allied health) or a clinical-to-technical career path.

Experience rolling out technology to multiple clinic or hospital sites.

Agile or Scrum experience.

Specialty ambulatory care experience. Not expected; the client will teach the specialty.
